Research supporting timely feedback

Timely feedback is critical for improving HSC responses because it allows students to act on advice while their thinking is still fresh, correcting errors before misconceptions become embedded and applying improvements immediately.

Research consistently identifies feedback as one of the highest-impact strategies in education — the Education Endowment Foundation (2021) reports it can advance learning by several months' worth of progress on average, with benefits especially pronounced in science subjects.

Students who receive prompt, specific feedback score significantly higher on assessments than those who do not, and also show improved engagement and confidence in their learning (Oliver, 2025). Crucially, immediate feedback produces significantly larger performance gains than delayed feedback on the same material (Stenger, 2014).

Without timely feedback, students risk embedding incorrect understanding and compounding gaps in their knowledge (Boxer, 2020; Indiana University Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning, 2023). Emerging research also confirms that AI-generated feedback can meaningfully improve students' revision quality, motivation, and cognitive outcomes (Meyer et al., 2024).

What to know

Limitations & honest expectations

This tool is designed to support your learning — not replace your teacher, and here is what it can and can't do.

Best for printed HSC-style questions
Works best with typed/printed questions in HSC format. Handwritten questions or unusual formats may not be recognised correctly.
✍️
Handwriting must be legible
Very messy handwriting may be partially misread. Words the AI can't read are flagged with [?] so you can check your photo.
🤖
AI marking is not infallible
The feedback is AI-generated and aligned to NSW HSC criteria, but may occasionally miss nuance. Use it as a guide, not a final grade.
🔒
Privacy — first name + initial only
Only your first name and surname initial are stored. Photos are processed and not retained. No full names or student IDs are collected.
📡
Requires internet connection
The app sends your photo to an AI model for marking. A stable wifi or 4G connection is needed.

Privacy & compliance

Privacy & NSW Department of Education Guidelines

This tool has been developed and is maintained by Mr Lawrance to support student learning. It is designed to align with NSW Department of Education guidance on the use of AI, including data minimisation, de-identification, and secure processing of student work.

✅ What is collected and used
  • Student submissions consist of images of written work only (e.g. handwritten responses)
  • Submissions must not include names, faces, or any identifying features
  • Only first name and surname initial (e.g. "Steve L") may be used to personalise feedback and display class progress
🚫 What is NOT collected or stored
  • No student photos showing faces
  • No full names
  • No student ID numbers
  • No class lists
  • No identifying personal information
  • No full student responses are retained after processing
🔄 How data is handled
  • Student work is securely transmitted to an external AI service to generate feedback
  • Images and responses are not stored after processing is complete
  • The only data retained is first name and surname initial for classroom use (e.g. feedback display or leaderboard)
🪪 De-identification requirement
  • All submitted work must be de-identified before upload
  • Teachers and students are responsible for ensuring no identifying information is visible
🔐 Security
  • All API access is managed securely server-side
  • No API keys or system credentials are exposed to students
📋 Consent
  • This tool is used for educational purposes to improve student writing and feedback
  • Parent/carer consent should be obtained prior to use
